Severe Weather Hits Corvettes at Carlisle

Dinner was cut short Saturday evening in Carlisle when we received word from Garnett and Sandy that a severe thunderstorm with heavy winds had moved through the Carlisle Fairgrounds. Several phone calls indicated that the CCA tent had been blown down leaving wet merchandise scattered around our area and a late evening trip confirmed it. In addition to our tent, several others were down as well and a number of cars had been damaged. There were also a few injuries so please keep these individuals in your thoughts and prayers.

Corvettes at Carlisle Day 2 Highlights

Saturday at Carlisle was hot hot hot! With a heat index reaching into triple digits everyone was looking for ways to stay cool. CCA added several new members and continued to have a good time with the 80 plus Vettes that filled our area in the Fun Display. The day was filled with a variety of activities. Garnett and Sandy led a new fundraising event called Basket Bingo, Celebrity Judging was in full effect and Found Caravan Corvette Club was awarded a plaque for the most club participation.

By the end of the day, CCA had word that three member cars had received Celebrity

Things are off to a great start for Corvettes at Carlisle. Over 80 CCA members proudly displayed their Vettes in the Fun Field and one member even added to their Vette collection by purchasing a very clean 40th anniversary edition C-4 (more to come on that soon).
The highlight of the morning was the presentation of Lifetime Membership Plaques to CCA directors Garnett and Sandy Rogers. In the afternoon, thousands were impressed as Bowling Green Assembly Plant Manager, Will Cooksey "smoked em" in a specially engineered ZO6.

'57 CORVETTE TO MAKE SOUTH CENTRAL KENTUCKY VETTETASTIC

Chicago began the craze with a Parade of Cows, Lexington’s herd followed with Horse Mania and South Central Kentucky can expect a fleet of ’57 Corvettes making our region Vettetastic in 2008.

The South Central Kentucky Chapter of the American Red Cross is bringing the Corvette to South Central Kentucky like never before.

Vettetastic, a public art project, will grace the streets of South Central Kentucky during the summer of 2008, featuring as many as 300 ’57 Corvettes, as well as treasure hunts, self-guided road course tour maps, a ’57 preview party, a people’s choice award and much, much more.

Sponsors will work with artists of their choice to decorate, paint and otherwise adorn a 1:2.8 scale, fiberglass ’57 Corvette measuring five feet long, two feet wide and 18 inches tall. Only 300, numbered, fiberglass Corvettes will be available for sponsorship and auctioned off during the 2008 National Corvette Homecoming.

Vettetastic will be a biannual event featuring a new model for auction every other year. Anticipated models include the ’63 Split Window Coupe in 2010, the ’68 Stingray in 2012, the C5 in 2014 and Z06 in 2016.

Proceeds from Vettetastic will be used to support Red Cross’ mission to provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies, as well as to support programs like Armed Forces Emergency Services, Health and Safety Education, Disaster Services, Youth Disaster Response, International Services and more.

To sponsor one of these blank ’57 Corvettes, contact the South Central Kentucky Chapter of the American Red Cross at (270) 781-7377 or visit www.vettetastic.org. To ensure delivery in January/February 2008, sponsorships must be secured by September 30. Only 300 sponsorships are available. Completed ’57 Corvettes are to be returned to South Central Kentucky by mid-May for display through mid-August.

Artists wishing to submit designs for consideration for the Vettetastic portfolio should visit www.vettetastic.org to print an application and templates. Artists may submit multiple designs and will work directly with sponsors to determine compensation.

The South Central Kentucky Chapter of the American Red Cross provides disaster preparedness and response and health and safety education to residents of Allen, Butler, Metcalfe, Monroe, Simpson and Warren counties, as well as assistance to families with members in the military.

C5 Computer Error Codes

Have you ever wonder what the error codes mean on your C5 or how to retrieve them?

Follow these simple steps and you can find out if your C5 has any problems being reported by the computer.

1. Turn the key to the ON position, but don't start the engine.

2. Clear any messages displayed on the DIC by pressing the RESET button.

3. Hold the OPTIONS button down and press the FUEL button 4 times. The computer will automatically display all the codes it has created. It will cycle through each code every 3 seconds.

Note any code that ends in H is a history code indicating something that has occured in the past but is fine now.

Once the computer has finished going through all of the codes, press RESET to enter the manual configuration mode. It will start with a module and show "NO CODES" or '#CODES".

To clear the errors, once in manual mode, press and hold RESET until it displays "NO CODES". Press OPTIONS to go the next module. Repeat this step until you reset the codes in all the computer modules. Only reset the codes if you want to. It is not nessary to do this.

Guest Author Melvin Gregory

From time to time, CCA will be inviting special guests to author posts for the CCA Blog. It gives me great pleasure to introduce our first guest Mr. Melvin Gregory.

Melvin has restored and shown older cars for many years. His love for the Corvette started in the sixties after a school trip gave him the opportunity to see the assembly line in action at the St.Louis, Missouri plant.

His first Corvette was purchased from a St. Louis Dealer in 1968. It was a 1963 silver coupe that had been used on the racing circuit. The car which had the roll cage, transmission & suspension intact received a rebuilt 327 with three dueces as its replacement engine. The coupe was run at the MOKAN dragway between Joplin, Missouri & Pittsburg, Kansas in 1969.

Next for Melvin was a 1977 silver coupe that was shipped to Germany during his time in the armed service. Melvin regularly drove the Autobahn in this C3.

Currently, Melvin is the proud owner of two Corvettes. A rebuilt 1978 Silver Anniversary Coupe and a 1999 pewter coupe. The former president of the Heartland Corvette Club, he now resides in Elizabethtown, Kentucky with his wife Linda, another Vette enthusiast. He is a long time member of the Corvette Club of America and is seen in this photo serving as our Certification Judge during Corvettes at Carlisle.

Corvette Club of America's First Blog Post

Welcome to the Corvette Club of America blog. We are very excited about adding this feature to our web site and hope all our members and guests enjoy the content they will find posted here.

The CCA team has just returned to Kentucky following an awesome weekend in Carlisle, Pennsylvania for the 25th Corvettes at Carlisle. The event included over 2,600 Vettes & the largest reunion of Grand Sports ever with 131 of these unique C-4s on display. In the photo is the CCA team with new friends Dan & Willa Jaquess of Owensboro the proud owners of GS #681.

Their car was selected as CCA's Celebrity Judge winner because it was the only Grand Sport in attendance with a license plate from the home of the Corvette, Kentucky. Add to this the great conversations with Dan & Willa and CCA was proud to give them this year's honor.

Be sure to watch for the Winter issue of Corvette Capers that will include a full recap of the happenings in Carlisle. In the meantime, the fall issue is headed to press and should be in member's mailboxes very soon.
